The Umpqua Valley Christian boys soccer team won its fourth straight game Tuesday night defeating Coquille 5-0 at Fir Grove Park.
4:07 AM · Oct 2, 2019“We started out slow. Coquille parked the buss, put most of their time in their zone,” UVC coach Chris Guastaferro said. “It was difficult to navigate their sea of players so we resorted to outside shots, corners and crosses and crashed the box.” UVC (6-1, 5-1) sits in second place in Special District 4 behind first place Brookings. The Monarchs got their first goal from Blake Withers in the 23rd minute. Colby Sewall added another in the 54th minute. Spencer Adams scored in the 68th minute. There was a self-goal by Coquille in 74th minute. Coby Sewall added his second goal in the 76th minute. UVC had 18 shots on goal compared to just two to shots on goal for Coquille. UVC goes on the road for the next five games starting Thursday at South Umpqua at 4p.m. “It’s going to be an interesting stretch. It’s definitely a mentality we have to have because we’ve had the home town support and we’ve been relaxed cause we haven’t had to travel and were used to our field,” Guastaferro said. “The second half-of-the-season we’re going to have to make some mental adjustments. They’re going to have to dig deep. This is where we prepare for playoffs. If we continue our momentum that we have created then will be prepared for the playoffs. We’re making adjustments to try and be competitive with Brookings.”
