Umpqua Valley Habitat for Humanity Begins Rebuild for Wildfire Survivor in Glide

12:53 AM · Jun 29, 2023

Umpqua Valley’s Habitat for Humanity has started work on its 15th home build. The newest project involves rebuilding a home for an Archie Creek Wildfire survivor in Glide, in collaboration with Glide Revitalization. Executive Director Robin Hartman, General Contractor Curtis Gordon, and Volunteer Coordinator Scott Beery are leading the project, aiming to provide more than just a roof overhead - they are rebuilding hope in a community still in recovery. Established in 1996, the Umpqua Valley chapter has proven its commitment to affordable housing, building homes in Roseburg, Sutherlin, Glide, and soon, Riddle. The team operates primarily with the help of volunteers and is currently seeking more helping hands. With a core volunteer base of about ten, the organization is inviting individuals aged 16 and older to contribute their time and efforts. Experience in construction isn't a necessity as volunteering with Habitat offers an opportunity to learn new skills while strengthening community ties. In addition to their rebuilding and new home construction efforts, the Umpqua Valley chapter runs a home repair program aimed at lower-income individuals or those on a fixed income. Repair projects are typically scheduled for Wednesdays, with new home builds on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. Even bigger plans lie ahead for the Umpqua Valley chapter. In 2024, they plan to commence construction on an ambitious project in Riddle, where they've acquired enough land to build 18-19 new single-family homes. The Umpqua Valley chapter also operates a monthly warehouse sale, a fundraising effort that supports their new home builds and repair programs. This event offers an array of new and gently used furniture, appliances, and lighting, providing a chance for community members to purchase goods while supporting a worthy cause. The next sale is slated for Saturday, July 15th, from 9 am to 2 pm at the organization's warehouse located at 225 NE Bogard Street, Roseburg, OR.
