Roseburg High's Nursing Program: Paving the Path to Medical Careers

10:58 PM · May 1, 2023

Taking blood pressure, assisted feeding in bed, ambulation with a gait belt, transfers from beds in and out of wheelchairs are only a few of the hands-on experiences students gain in the Roseburg High School Nursing Assistant Level One Program. RHS offers juniors and seniors the chance to participate in the dual enrollment program with Umpqua Community College. The program is the only one like it in Douglas County and one of only a handful in Oregon. “I would definitely recommend this class to anyone looking to join the medical field,” said senior Sorrell Carter. “It’s a huge step up because we’re in high school and it’s a great opportunity to get ahead. We have a wonderful teacher who makes learning fun and interactive.” “I think it’s fun to learn and get a better understanding. When we go to clinicals, it allows us to see if we want to pursue this career choice,” added junior Addison Scalf. Roseburg High School students who enroll in the program have the opportunity to earn nine college credits that will walk students straight into Umpqua Community College’s Nursing Program. This valuable resource makes it easier for students to transition into a nursing career. As a bonus, they can gain work experience right out of high school as a certified nursing assistant. Students in the program participate in classroom and skill lab instruction at the high school during school hours. In addition, students gain hands-on clinical experiences during work nights and weekends in off-campus care facilities. The Oregon State Board of Nursing-approved course involves 164-plus hours of training in basic bedside nursing skills, basic restorative skills, mental health and social service needs, personal care skills, and knowledge of clients’ rights. Participants gain the knowledge and skills necessary to care for clients in long-term care and acute care facilities that are under direct care of a licensed nurse. The partnership also extends to CHI Mercy Health, where students have opportunities to complete practicums. “So far I have a 100% employment rate, all of my students have jobs by the time they are finished and have gone on to the Nursing Program,” instructor Jan Dawson said. “I love watching their personal growth through this class, the change from week 1 to week 7. From the beginning to the point we’re going to clinicals is dramatic. They learn teamwork. They work together, the camaraderie is outstanding. I think the growth they get in this class is tremendous.” Via Roseburg School District
