Rare Partially Leucistic Robin In The Snow

10:42 PM · Feb 23, 2023

I went over to Stewart Park yesterday by the train and came across this Partially Leucistic American Robin near the train looking for food. This bird has been present in the area for a number of weeks and was a fun bird to come across during the snow yesterday! Leucistic robins are different from normal robins because they are completely white or just have white in places that robins don't normally have. Here you can see white feathers on its head which normally isn't there. Leucism is caused by a genetic change that keeps the bird from developing normal feathers by hindering the placement of melanin, which makes the color.
