Freeze Warning Issued for Douglas County

10:28 PM · Nov 16, 2021

The National Weather Service has issued a freeze warning for Central Douglas County from 1 a.m. to 8 a.m. Wednesday morning. Temperatures are predicted to get as low at 29 degrees in Roseburg, Drain, Sutherlin, Green, Myrtle Creek, and Canyonville and the surrounding areas. Currently, no organizations have let the City of Roseburg or the Homeless Transition Action Group know about plans to open a warming center tonight. The City of Roseburg said they are willing to work with organizations who are interested in opening a warming center. HTAG Chair Wayne Ellsworth said he would also help coordinate getting supplies and volunteers as best he can. Ellsworth said once someone opens their doors, finding the supplies - food, beverages, cots, etc. - can happen pretty quickly. The biggest need is space. The Centers for Disease Control shows in 2019, the most recent data available, 18 people died of cold-related deaths in Oregon. Cold-related deaths are higher in rural areas and among older people. Freezes can also kill crops, sensitive vegetation, and unprotected outdoor plumbing. The weather service recommends protecting tender plants from the cold and protecting outdoor water pipes including sprinkler systems by wrapping, draining, or allowing them to drip. Forecasts show temperatures rising a bit after Wednesday before dipping down into the lower 30’s again later this weekend.
