The Wine Destination Opens in Downtown Roseburg

2:16 AM · Oct 28, 2021

A new type of wine store is opening in downtown Roseburg on Friday. The Wine Destination at 526 SE Jackson St. is a store that is all things wine; buy, taste, share, learn about wine. It’s owned and operated by husband and wife, Keith Tidball and Sarah Everman. The couple met over wine while both running wine meetups in Phoenix, Ariz. They have both always been serious about enjoying wine. They’ve both worked in the wine industry in sales, distribution, serving, and other parts of the business, but it wasn’t until they moved to Roseburg in 2020 that the dream became a reality. “We’ve been in love with wine for a long time,” Everman said. “We worked in the wine industry for a little while, and we finally got enough tools to say ‘we’ll do it ourselves.’ We had a general idea of what we wanted to do, but a lot of it was this building.” The shop sells wine from all over the world, offers some wine tasting, hosts a wine club, is licensed to open bottles bought in the store, and provides wine education classes from people who love wine so much they became Certified Specialists of Wine. The specialization is focused on consumer education. “There truly is a world of wine out there,” Tidball said. “We'll teach the basics -- some of those things you see people doing, you think they’re snobs, but there actually is a reason for some of this stuff. We’ll also teach some of the more advanced things like tasting wines from Austria or Greece. There’s a lot of wine out there outside of Umpqua and Oregon.” They moved to be in a wine-growing part of the country and fell in love with Roseburg. They bought a fixer upper and were managing the remodel remotely until their jobs allowed for remote work and they moved up in June 2020 to do the work themselves. Then they did most of the work on The Wine Destination. “We’re going on two straight years of nothing but renovation,” Everman said laughing. They closed on half of the building that formerly housed Brown’s Shoe Fit and completely renovated the space while preserving some of the history from the building. Most of the wood in the shelves and the bar comes from the shelving from the back room, they kept the original floors in some of the rooms, and there is a barred window in the storage area that Tidball and Everman have been told is from a Wells Fargo that used to be there. Tidball and Everman are excited to be in downtown and partnered with other downtown businesses for a pre-Halloween event on their opening day. The event is just encouraging people to come downtown, see new and old businesses, and end at the Halloween costume ball at Sunnyside Theater at 7 p.m. Some businesses are staying open later, running special deals, or partnering with other businesses. “There’s a lot of new businesses downtown,” Tidball said. “They’re excited to be here and we’re excited to be here and we want people of Roseburg and the surrounding areas to be excited to come back downtown.” Everman said she sees it as a new era for downtown Roseburg and she wants people to see it with fresh eyes.
