Veterans Appreciation Tournament This Saturday At Roseburg Country Club
6:29 PM · Jul 13, 2021The 6th Annual Veterans Appreciation Golf Tournament is being hosted this Saturday, July 17 at the Roseburg Country Club benefiting veterans and military members in Douglas County. The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 2468 in Roseburg hosts the tournament and funds raised go into the veteran's relief fund which helps local veterans. “We have quite a bit of people in the community who support and donate to this event,” VFW Post 2468 Commander Mike Eakin said. “We’re looking at over 100 golfers playing, last year we had 152 golfers and 15 volunteers which is pretty darn good. We have Charlie Company, 1st battalion 186th infantry division (Roseburg Oregon National Guard) presenting the color guard. My granddaughter Rebekah Reid is singing the national anthem.” The Veterans tournament will also have a Humvee and Jeep on the first tee, along with a marine and a retired Airforce veteran there to pose for pictures and pull the American flag out of the pin on the 18th hole. There is a $5,000 hole in one prize on the 17th hole. There is also a 50-50 raffle for the closest to the pin shot on the par 3, 6th hole. “It’s a pretty good event, it helps keep this VFW open and helps our veteran’s relief fund,” Eakin said. “When it goes to the relief fund, we help pay unemployed veterans bills. Whatever their need is that is what that fund is for. We have homeless veterans, and we help give them food and whatever we can. This helps get them through hard times. That’s what we’re mandated to do.” The VFW Post 2468 in Roseburg has hosted the tournament every year at the Roseburg Country Club. “It’s a fabulous event, we have a lot of participants from the community. People are going to be enjoying themselves chasing that little white ball,” Eakin said. “We usually net roughly $10,000 for the veteran's relief fund. It’s a lot of work, to put on this tournament but we have some good raffle prizes. We have 70-inch color tv, a beach cruiser bicycle, wine, Wildlife Safari passes, and quite a few things. 17 or 18 different raffle prizes.”
