Thielsen Fire Severity Map Released

5:28 PM · Sep 30, 2020

(Umpqua National Forest) The Thielsen Fire BAER team finalized their first science-based assessment product: the soil burn severity map. Soil scientists analyze satellite imagery captured immediately before and after the fire to map how dramatic the landscape has changed. Based on what they see in the satellite imagery, their experience in the area, and any ground-based observations they make, the team creates this map product. The soil burn severity map is just the first step in an assessment process that includes modeling of erosion and debris flow potential, for example.
