Fire NW of Mt Thielsen Forces Evacuation of Diamond Lake

4:06 PM · Sep 9, 2020

A fire, which was first reported Tuesday morning has caused evacuations of Diamond Lake resort. Due to all the other fire activity in Oregon, there apparently weren't any resources to throw at the fire. Last evening, winds really kicked in and caused the fire to grow Here is an account from Diamond Lake Resort: "First of all. All employees and guests are accounted for and left safely. The fate of our houses and the resort will be known in the morning. If you have reservations today or this week watch this page for information. At this time nobody is at the resort to answer phones. WHAT HAPPENED? We reported a small smoke northwest of Mt. Thielsen Tuesday morning. By Tuesday late afternoon the fire was producing a large column of smoke. At dusk, the fire was fanned by high winds and gusts. We were told at that time if the fire comes over the ridge we need to evacuate the area. The Forest Service told us there were no resources to help us. At about 11 pm it was obvious that the fire was over the ridge and heading down towards Hwy 138. At this time we started Evacuating employees and guests from the lodge area and the RV Park. At about 2:30 am we had everyone out. At the same time, the Douglas County Sheriff and Forest Service evacuated the campgrounds. About that time is when the fire jumped Hwy 138 at milepost 78. As I write this a large group of employees are with me at the junction of Hwy 138 and Hwy 97. Not knowing what we will come back to." Here is the evacuation notice from the Douglas County Sheriffs Office: "DIAMOND LAKE, Ore. - A Level 3 Evacuation Order has been issued for all homes, cabins, recreation sites, and the lodge at Diamond Lake. There is a significant wildfire burning in the area of the lake. Danger to the area is current or imminent, and residents and visitors should evacuate immediately and without delay via the safest route possible. If you choose to ignore this advisement, you must understand that emergency services may not be able to assist you further. Do not delay leaving to gather any belongings or make efforts to protect any home or structure. This will be the last notice that you receive. Be advised Highway 138E is currently closed at Dry Creek. Alternate routes may be Highway 230 or Highway 97." More information as it becomes available.
