Roseburg Albertsons Set to Close

In an email to Roseburg Tracker on Monday afternoon, Jill McGinnis, Director of Communications for Safeway/Albertsons Portland division has confirmed that the Roseburg Albertsons would be closing by February 8th. The Roseburg Albertsons opened October 10th, 2001. “The Portland Division of Albertsons announced last week plans to close its Roseburg Albertsons location. The store is expected to close on or before Saturday, February 8th, 2025. Like all retailers, we are constantly evaluating the performance of our stores. Closing an underperforming store is always a tough decision, but we are focused on growing our business by being the favorite local supermarket, and running great stores where people love to shop. That’s what will enable us to offer the products and services our customers value most in this market.” Shoplifting has become a much bigger issue over the past 20 years, but according to one employee I spoke with, the Roseburg Albertsons had a significant theft issue, likely contributing to the store's underperformance. Shoplifting was also listed as a big contributor to the recent announced closure of Big Lot's in Roseburg according to it's store manager. (See story here: https://www.roseburgtracker.com/posts/longtime-roseburg-big-lots-to-close-doors-after-25-years-of-service-to-community) The prescriptions at the Albertsons pharmacy will be transferred to the Roseburg Safeway Pharmacy, according to McGinnis. A new Winco recently opened adjacent to Albertsons, with Sherms located on the other side of Winco, creating increased competition in the area. According to the employee I spoke with, it's possible a few employees might transfer to Safeway in Roseburg, and some are considering possible transfers to Cottage Grove or Grants Pass.
