In Memory of Kay Bjornson

Our community lost an incredible man in Kay Bjornson. Kay was my chess coach at Hucrest Elementary School back in the early 90's. I have one memory of Kay I'll never forget. I was in a final match at the state chess tournament with a kid that lasted 1hr and 45 minutes and I ended up losing right at the end. (I ended up placing 2nd in the State of Oregon) I was gutted. I stood up and started walking off with tears in my eyes and Kay, who'd been watching the whole match, swooped in, put his hand on my shoulder and said excellent job, I'm proud of you. He then rushed me outside to take a walk around the World Forestry Center property to help get my mind off the match. Kay was an incredible coach and a wonderful person. I'll always be thankful for the impact he had on my life.
