Gravel Creek Fire Discovered 8 Miles SW of Riddle

3:04 AM · Aug 28, 2023

Today, Sunday, August 27, 2023, at approximately 12:50 p.m., crews from the Douglas Forest Protective Association (DFPA) responded to an estimated 1.5 – 2-acre fire located almost 8 miles southwest of Riddle, OR. This fire was spotted during a patrol check of areas that registered lightning strikes during the 08/24/23 lightning storm that brought a total of 65 registered strikes to the Douglas District. During several days of reconnaissance, no smoke or heat had been detected, until now. DFPA helicopter drops as well as groundwork are making headway on the fire. Due to the location and lack of a natural water source in the area, there is currently an hour's delay in water transportation. There are currently 3- Type 6 engines, 1 squad, 1 dozer, and 1 water tender on scene with more resources on their way. The moderately active fire is located on a steep ridge with tree snags. There is no threat to homes or structures. A progress update on this fire will be shared tomorrow.
