Rufous Hummingbird Migration Underway
11:43 PM · Mar 7, 2023It’s about the time when Rufous Hummingbirds start returning from their wintering sites in Mexico. Rufous Hummingbirds have one of the longest migratory journeys of any bird. They migrate roughly 2,000-3,900 miles (one way) from Mexico in late winter and early spring. According to All About Birds "During their long migrations, Rufous Hummingbirds make a clockwise circuit of western North America each year. They move up the Pacific Coast in late winter and spring, reaching Washington and British Columbia by May. As early as July they may start south again, traveling down the chain of the Rocky Mountains." Here in Douglas County, you can expect to see Rufous Hummingbirds start to arrive in the next few weeks to a month. If you would like to attract Rufous Hummingbirds to your yard, consider putting up a hummingbird feeder or planting hummingbird friendly flowers like Trumpet Vine or other red or yellow flowers.
